Four-year-performance of oak and pine seedlings following mechanical site preparation with lightweight excavators

چکیده

Mechanical site preparation methods that used tools mounted on lightweight excavators and provided localised intensive were tested in eight experimental sites across France where the vegetation was dominated either by (L.) Moench or Kuhn. Two (Deep Scarifier: DS; Deep Scarifier followed Multifunction Subsoiler: DS+MS) pine ( L., var. (Loudon) Hyl. Aiton) oak (Matt.) Liebl. L.) plantations. Regional commonly locally (herbicide, disk harrow, mouldboard plow) (repeated herbicide application; untreated control) as references experiments. Neighbouring cover, seedling survival, height basal diameter assessed over three to five years after plantation. For pines growing , four 37% 98% greater DS DS+MS, respectively, than control. it 62% 107% same treatments. oak, only 4% 15% 13% 25% pines, survival rate 26% 32% higher 64% 70% 3% 29% 31% . Herbicide, when applied for planting, best growth performances oaks these species combinations, DS+MS treatments reduced neighbouring cover one following preparation.Molinia caeruleaPteridium aquilinumPinus sylvestrisPinus nigracorsicanaPinus pinasterQuercus petraeaQuercus roburM. caeruleaP. aquilinumM. caerulea P. aquilinumP. aquilinum

Nutrient Losses following Site Preparation Burning in a Harvested Loblolly Pine Site

Soil loss and nutrient concentrations in runoff were evaluated to determine the effects of site preparation burning on a recently harvested loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) site in east Texas. Soil and nutrient losses prior to treatment were approximately the same from control plots and pretreatment burn plots. Nutrient analysis of runoff samples indicated that the prescribed burn caused increase...

Performance of Oak Seedlings Grown under Different Oust® XP Regimes

Herbaceous weed control (HWC) is prescribed for growing season control of vegetative competition in hardwood afforestation attempts on former agricultural areas. Without HWC, planted seedlings often exhibit poor growth and survival. While currently employed HWC methods are proven, there is a substantial void in research comparing HWC treatments spanning multiple years. A total of 4,320 bare-roo...

Density and Age Affect Performance of Containerized Loblolly Pine Seedlings

Loblolly pine seedlings were grown in 1 x 5 inch biodegradable plastic tubes for 10, 12, and 14 weeks at densities of 42, 84, 126, and 168 per square foot. Seedling density and age significantly affected seedling development at time of outplant ing, and densi ty became more important as greenhouse growing t imes increased. Al l morphological characteristics measured when seedlings were planted-...

Four Site-Preparation Techniques for Regenerating Pine-Hardwood Mixtures in the Piedmont

Four variations of the fell-and-burn technique, a system developed to produce mixed pinehardwood stands in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, were compared in the Piedmont region. All variations of this technique successfully improved the commercial value of low-quality hardwood stands by introducing a pine component. After six growing seasons, loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) occupied the domin...
